A day in Majgaon Village/ Pokhara
Majgaon has a population of about 80 villagers and around 25 traditional houses with “Gurung” as the dominant ethnic group in the village. Generations live together under one roof, with most residents being women, children, and the elderly, as men are mostly away for better earnings and women’s lives are focused on raising children, looking after the elderly, and doing agriculture. In addition to their roles at home, these resilient women drive community progress through the Ama Samuha, or Mothers’ Committee. This group is dedicated to women’s empowerment, advancing education, and tackling issues like primary healthcare, child nutrition, sanitation, family planning, and even community conflict resolution.
Highlights of Your Day in Majgaon
Visit Tanchok Primary School: Start the day by visiting a small primary school with around 23 children, from grades 1 to 5. Meet with the school’s principal to gain insight into Nepal’s education system, its successes, and the challenges faced by local schools. Take part in classroom activities, whether teaching an English lesson, reading a story, or sharing a poem with the children.
Experience Village Life and Traditions: Embark on a guided village tour, immersing yourself in Majgaon’s everyday life. Observe local winemaking, traditional weaving of ‘Bhangra’ (cloth), wicker basket crafting, and wheat flour grinding. Meet the village shaman to receive blessings and watch the churning of butter and the making of ‘Sel Roti,’ a local rice bread delicacy.
Join in Preparing a Traditional Nepalese Meal: Participate in the communal preparation of lunch, assisting village women with chopping vegetables and cooking. Help set the table, serve, and then join the Mothers’ Committee for lunch. Enjoy lively conversation as you learn about the challenges and triumphs of village life, from the women dedicated to shaping a stronger, more resilient community.
This immersive day in Majgaon connects you with the heart of the village and its people. Each interaction, whether in the classroom, kitchen, or field, is a step toward building cross-cultural connections and contributing to the sustainable growth of this beautiful Himalayan community.
